The ERRIDS trials conducted in 2005 helped validate
the concept as well as collect input on system
improvements prior to wider deployment in
Europe.
In a bid to enhance the site security system, a
new access control system, new fences and an
extended closed circuit television system were
installed at the Maastricht Centre during 2005.
ATM SECURITY
The Maastricht Centre continued, during 2005, to
actively support ATM security programmes by participating
in the European Regional Renegade
Information Dissemination System (ERRIDS) crossborder
live trials, using a pre-operational test bed.
The ERRIDS system aims to optimise the sharing
of security-related information in real time between
ATM civil and military service providers, NATO and
national air defence units, national government
authorities, intelligence agencies, police agencies,
aircraft operators, airports and other units playing
a part in aviation security. The ultimate objective is
to provide decision-makers with all the information
needed to take an informed decision in the event
of an aircraft being used as a weapon for terrorist
activities.

oped and tested. Software integration testing with
legacy systems was started and will be continued in
2006. The new FDPS is planned to become operational
on 2 November 2007.
In October 2005, the latest iteration of the ATM surveillance
tracker and server system, known as
ARTAS Version 7, commenced operations in the live
ATC system. The new radar system provides a highquality
picture of the air traffic situation to both local
and remote users of the RADNET radar network.
Finally, preparatory activities were completed,
enabling the opening of an additional sector in the
Hanover sector group. The Centre’s 17th sector
came into effect in April 2006. The next sector is
planned in the Deco Sector Group in the summer of
2006.
ISO 9001 CERTIFICATION
2005 finally saw the achievement, on 15
December, of ISO 9001 certification for the provision
of air navigation services, the support activities
of procurement and maintenance of technical
systems and air traffic control professional training.
ISO 9001 certification is an important step towards
meeting the Single European Sky requirements and
will provide a basis for continuous improvement.

ENVIRONMENT
In the face of rising levels of air traffic, the need to
protect the environment has become imperative.
The Maastricht Centre contributed to this vital concern
by allocating direct routes to airspace users
whenever this was feasible. Over the years, this
practice has generated not only important savings
for airlines in terms of fuel and time, but also important
gas emission reductions.
Also during 2005, support was provided to the
Advanced Arrivals and Departures Techniques
(AADT) Project conducted at Schiphol Airport, the
Netherlands. During the trials for this project, run in
2006, aircraft were allowed to fly a preferred trajectory
in descent, in order to estimate the possible
benefits, including those of reduced noise and fuel
burn.
Current studies on the optimisation of a future operational
concept, using the full benefits of emerging
leading-edge technology, are also expected to generate
important environmental benefits in the future.
MAIN TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS
The next-generation Flight Data Processing System
(FDPS), a major enabler to meet future challenges in
terms of air traffic growth, remained on schedule, to
specification and within budget. During 2005, the
