Just before taking off, altimeters
must be set to the aerodrome setting
or elevation. Before reaching the
appropriate flight level, use 29.92” or
1013.2 mb. In the hold, before
landing, set the aerodrome setting
just before the lowest flight level of
the procedure. Otherwise, the
destination setting must be set just
before commencing descent.
Between Regions - 602.37
Except where otherwise authorized
by ATC, when going from the ASR
to the SPR, set all altimeters to 29.92
inches or 1013.2 mb immediately
after entry into the standard pressure
region. When going the other way,
use the setting of the nearest station
along the route or nearby, if the
stations are more than 150 nm apart,
immediately before entry into the
ASR.
Testing
All VFR aircraft in Class B airspace,
and all IFR aircraft, must have had
an altimeter inspection and static
pressure system check in the last 24
months.

Language Used - 602.133/134/135
You can only use English and
French, depending on the initial
communication. Some FSSs and
ATC units must provide services
according to the tables in these
sections, but they all must provide
services in English.
On initial contact with ATC, state
the aircraft type, followed by the last
four letters of the registration, as in
"Cessna ABCD." You can use the
word "helicopter" as well. ATC may
abbreviate subsequent transmissions
to the last three letters if there is no
confusion.

Morse Code
Although the codes (see above) are
printed on maps, etc., it's still a good
idea to learn them, even if only to
keep your job in an airline (many
make it a requirement to have at
least 6 words a minute). It also stops
you peering at your map in the murk
and moving your head around too
much. Amateur radio clubs are a
good source of inexpensive training
materials. Starting off at a high speed
is best, with the simplest letters. E,
for example, is one dot (dit). Just
listen to a stream of Morse, picking
out that letter only, then add
another, such as T, which is a dash
(dah), then I (2 dots), M (2 dashes)
and so on. In a few days you could
be up to 20 words a minute.
Continuous Listening Watch -
602.136
A listening watch must be kept on
appropriate frequencies.
Communications Failure
Malfunctions (including navaids)
under IFR in controlled airspace
must be reported immediately to
ATC.
VFR
In Class B, C or D airspace, you
must either land at the aerodrome
controlling the zone (see NORDO,
below), or leave by the shortest
route. Set the transponder to 7600
and inform ATC as soon as possible.
Outside the airspace, continue under
VFR to the nearest suitable
aerodrome, set 7600, use NORDO.
If all else fails, enter the airspace
squawking 7600, use NORDO and
confess to ATC afterwards.
NORDO
The procedure for arriving at an
aerodrome without using a radio is
to approach the circuit from upwind,
join crosswind at circuit height and
join the downwind leg. Keep
watching for traffic and light signals.
Look for traffic before turning
finals, and make another circuit if no
permission for landing is given.
After landing, taxi to the ramp.

Daylight exists half an hour before
sunrise to half an hour after sunset,
or whenever the Sun’s disc is less
than 6° below the horizon (just in
case you’re up in the Frozen North,

where the Sun doesn’t really set).
