The good news is that these (and related)
factors are clearly on the wall and there are
technology and workplace solutions currently
available to mitigate the effects of such disruptive
demographics. These solutions range from
equipment/systems/services that:
• Automate and integrate processes
• Improve safety
• Reduce fatigue
• Reduce “touches”
• Organize work fl ows/streams
• Are fl exible and adaptable
• Are “off the shelf” and affordable
The bad news is that communities of users, manufacturers,
academics, consultants and publishers
rarely come together in structured ways to address
such complex subjects. In an attempt to create such
structure, Material Handling Industry of America
(MHIA) sponsored a milestone Material Handling
Logistics Summit in 2007 that has led to identifying
and challenging community stakeholders to
address 14 major themes (like the disruptive demographics
issue above).
Our next opportunity to come together as a larger
material handling and logistics community will
occur in Cleveland, Ohio April 21-24, 2008 at the
NA 2008 Show and Conference (www.NAShow.
com). The event will provide opportunities for research
and education, as well as the opportunity to
see practical supply chain solutions.
You will fi nd answers to much of the complexity
facing the workplace of the future at NA 2008.
As an added feature, Andrew Winston, the NA 2008
keynote speaker and a
leading authority on sustainability,
will share how
material handling and logistics
fi t into sustainable
business models.

4 On The Mhove
Since 1945, Material Handling Industry has relied on its volunteer
leadership to identify and respond to challenges and
opportunities facing the industry. Over the past two years
this column has been insightfully authored by my good friend
Brian McNamara. As of January 1, 2008 I have been honored to
receive the baton from Brian to serve as Executive Chairman for
2008 – 2009.
In assuming these new responsibilities, I would be remiss not to
acknowledge the remarkable accomplishments that have occurred
during Brian’s term and for his kind mentoring. He is a truly remarkable
individual who is always looking to make positive change.
The 2008 – 2009 Term of Offi ce begins against a backdrop of
uncertainty – a weakening economy, monetary and political instability,
complicated supply chains and disruptive demographics to
name a few. It is at times like these that we should all use every
tool at our disposal to not only weather the uncertainty but to look
for the opportunities that it brings.
Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA) leadership, on
behalf of our more than 800 member companies, remains fi rmly
and fully committed to organizing and delivering programming
relevant to all communities of interest in material handling and
logistics. Work Groups operating throughout the year will receive
input on challenges and opportunities before the industry and will
create important and timely responses.
Our 2008 program year stands to be the most active ever and
will offer insights and solutions invaluable to your success whatever
your level of industry involvement. Allow me to highlight a
few resources that should interest you in 2008. A more comprehensive

NA 2008 – April 21-24, 2008
Over 500 Exhibitors will convene at Cleveland, Ohio’s I-X
Center to demonstrate best-in-class material handling and logistics
equipment systems and services solutions.
The event, the largest and most extensive yet in Cleveland,
combines exhibits with 70 unique and complimentary 45-minute
on-fl oor seminars – each designed to provide a mixture of basic
and advanced applications topics.
As a very special feature, one of the leading authorities on sustainability,
Andrew Winston, will deliver a major keynote address
on how you can turn “green to gold” in your operations – you will
not want to miss this powerful session which is complimentary to
NA 2008 attendees.
