CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE IDLER HINGE MOVES DOWN FROM THE STABILIZER
SUPPORT BEAM WHEN YOU ATTACH THE BALANCE PANELS TO THE ELEVATOR.
FAILURE TO INSTALL THE BALANCE PANELS CORRECTLY CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO
EQUIPMENT.
(5) Connect the balance panels to the elevator installation [1] (Figure 406):
(a) Install the washers [65] and bolts [64].
(b) Install the washers [63] and bolts [62].
(c) Check the elevator balance panel seal gap SUBTASK 27-31-41-420-002.
(d) Make sure you install the hinge seals correctly before you tighten the bolt [64] and bolt [62].

(6) Connect the tab mechanism [34] to the elevator installation [1] and tab pushrods [26]
(Figure 404):
(a) Install the pin assembly [21], the bushing [33], the washer [32] and the nut [31] that attach
the tab mechanism [34] to the elevator.
(b) Tighten the mechanism nuts [31] to 25 - 35 pound-inches (2.8 - 4.0 newton-meters).
(c) Install the bolts [22], the washers [27], and new nuts [28] to attach the tab pushrods [26] to
the tab mechanism [34].
NOTE: If you loosened or removed the nuts [28], they need to be replaced with new nuts.
Using new nuts will ensure that they have the required run-on torque. Make sure
that new nuts are installed.
(d) Install the pin assembly [23], the washer [24], the washer [35], and the nut [25] that attach
the tab mechanism [34] to the elevator [1].
(e) Tighten the new nuts [28] to 50 - 80 pound-inches (5.7 - 9.0 newton-meters).
(f) Install the pin retainer [30] with the screws [29].

(7) Connect the tab mechanism [34] to the elevator installation [1] and tab pushrods [26]
(Figure 405):
(a) Install the bushings [33], the pin assemblies [21], the washers [32], and the nuts [31] that
attach the tab mechanism [34] to the elevator [1].
NOTE: You may have to move the hinge 2 bolt [74] outboard to torque the nut [31] of the
outboard tab mechanism attach point.
(b) Tighten the mechanism nuts [31] to 25 - 35 pound-inches (2.8 - 4.0 newton-meters).
(c) Install the spacers [23], bolts [22], washers [27], and new nuts [28] to attach the tab
pushrods [26] to the tab mechanism [34].
NOTE: If you loosened or removed the nuts [28], they need to be replaced with new nuts.
Using new nuts will ensure that they have the required run-on torque. Make sure
that new nuts are installed.
(d) Tighten the new nuts [28] to 70 - 80 pound-inches (7.9 - 9.0 newton-meters).

(e) Install the pin retainers [30] with the screws [29].

(8) At elevator hinge 2, do these steps:
(a) Make sure the clearance between the washer [75] and bushing [76] on the elevator hinge is
not less than 0.0150 inch (0.381 millimeter).
(b) Install washer [77] and nut [79].
1) Tighten the hinge 2 nut [79] by torquing the head of the bolt [74] to 113 - 138 poundinches
(12.8 - 15.6 newton-meters) while using a wrench to keep the nut [79] from
rotating.
NOTE: The normal torque for the nut [79] is 90 - 125 pound-inches (10.2 - 14.1 newtonmeters).
You cannot access the nut [79] with a torque wrench so you must
torque the head of the bolt [74] to the upper torque value of the nut, +/- 10
percent of that upper torque value. That torque value would be 125.0 +/- 12.5
pound-inches (which is 113 - 138 pound-inches (12.8 - 15.6 newton-meters)).
(c) Install the new pin [78].

(9) At elevator hinge 1, do these steps:
(a) Tighten the hinge 1 bushing [69] until it seats against the horizontal stabilizer bearing.
