ENROUTE
Flight Plan Navigation
Once the flight plan is entered and the system in the NAV mode, it is
ready to navigate the aircraft along that flight plan. No further entries
or procedures are necessary. GPS and IRS sensors will be selected
on the ground as shown on DATA 2/4. All other sensors will be
deselected until the aircraft is airborne. Other sensors are selected
via a landing gear squat switch at takeoff. In the event of a squat
switch failure the sensors select at 150kts TAS.
Whenever the current navigation leg is valid (TO waypoint displayed
on the NAV page) and the position is certain, the HSI flag will be out
of view and the desired track and related data will be displayed. Roll
steering outputs for flight guidance will be available if the navigation
leg and velocity are valid. Velocity will be valid if IRS velocities or
heading and TAS are available to the navigation computer. Once
coupled to the autopilot, the FMS will navigate the aircraft along a
great circle legs between flight plan waypoints. Care should be
taken when coupling to the autopilot. In most cases after takeoff, the
aircraft will be some distance from the first leg on the flight plan and
coupling can result in a major heading change as the FMS steers the
aircraft to a 45° intercept of the active FROM-TO leg.
HSI Display
The HSI will display lateral deviation from the current NAV leg. For
normal FROM/TO legs where the FROM and TO waypoints are fixed
waypoints the course indicator on the HSI or EHSI on an EFIS
display will agree with the great circle course between the
waypoints. Course deviation will be displayed in the usual manner
with full scale deflection of the HSI course needle equal to 5nm
when ENROUTE sensitivity is in use.

Certain procedures found in SIDs and Missed Approaches contain
legs that are not made up of fixed waypoints but a series of flight
path instructions that have no fixed terminator. These include
Course to an Altitude or a Heading to a Radial legs. In these
situations the system calculates a predicted waypoint based on the
aircraft’s current trajectory. This predicted waypoint will be displayed
on the EFIS and the HSI will display cross track deviation to the
predicted waypoint. When a heading is specified in a procedure, the
HSI will display a centered needle. The bearing pointer will indicate
the proper procedural heading.
NAV Function
The NAV key is used to access the navigation function display
pages. There are normally two NAV pages; however, when another
NAV mode such as APPROACH or HEADING is selected there will
be two or more display pages, which are cycled through by pressing
the PREV or NEXT function keys.
FMS Computed Courses versus Published Courses
Some differences may be observed between FMS displayed courses
and those published on aeronautical charts. These differences are
due to the fact that the charts are published using the VOR radials
that define the route, whereas the FMS displays the computed
course using local magnetic variation. FPL legs with XXX° displays
may vary from the published data by the amount of difference
between the defining VOR facility declination (i.e., the angle formed
between the VOR 0° radial and True North) and the magnetic
variation at the originating waypoint. Mag variation constantly shifts
with time, whereas the station declination is constant until the station
is realigned. Station declination may vary by several degrees from
local mag variation, depending upon how long ago the station was
realigned with local variation. Legs that have CRS XXX° or HDG
XXX° displays on the FPL pages should agree with the published
data on the charts, since these are provided as part of the navigation
data base and are not computed by the FMS.

Displays on the NAV page of the FMS for the current leg are
displayed using the current position magnetic variation so that the
proper desired track is displayed at all times using the magnetic
referenced instruments on board the aircraft. Minor differences
between the FMS computed courses and those on the published
charts have no effect on navigation accuracy, since the FMS
