Dual Cycle Data Base
In the case of the UNS-1C, -1Csp, -1D and -1K, there are two
separate data base memory banks to hold the electronic data base.
When a 28-day cycle is loaded into the FMS it replaces the data that
is in the currently unused data bank (the current data base is in the
other memory bank). At the first power-on cycle after the effective
start date of the new data base, it will automatically be used for
navigation. The advantage to having dual cycle data bases is that
the next data base cycle can be loaded into the FMS on the day it is
received, rather than the operator having to wait until the effective
start date.
In the case of the UNS-1B there is only one data base memory bank
and each update completely overwrites the old data.
The data base includes VHF and NDB navaids with plain-language
references, enroute and terminal waypoints, High and Low Altitude
airways, and airports. The operator may select either worldwide or
regional coverage as best suited to the aircraft operations.
Pilot Defined Navigation Data
In addition to the navigation data base, the FMS can store a
substantial amount of pilot-defined data. The pilot route database
has the capacity to store up to 200 pilot defined routes with up to 98
legs in each. Pilot-defined data can also include 200 waypoints, 100
Approaches and 100 Runways.

Company Defined Navigation Data
The protected company route data must be generated off-line using
a PC and the Universal Flight Planning program. It can only be
loaded via disk. A company route can be copied into the active flight
plan where it can be edited, but the basic route database cannot be
altered by the pilot. A company route is stored in “clearance
language,” that is, the Departure Airport, SID, Airway(s), STAR,
Approach and Destination Airport.
Performance Data Base
For certain aircraft, the AFM charts for takeoff and landing speeds,
as well as takeoff, climb and cruise engine settings have been
digitized and stored in the FMS. See AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE
SUPPLEMENT in the back of the FUEL & PERFORMANCE Section.
Sensor Watchdog
A sensor "watchdog" automatically protects against a large error
being input from a navigation sensor, which could cause an error in
the best computed position. This is accomplished by comparing
each sensor the unweighted average of all sensors and deselecting
faulty sensors. If the difference exceeds a preset value, the
"watchdog" will activate the appropriate messages to alert the pilot,
and in extreme cases (i.e. sensor greater than 50 nm or diverging at
> 50 knots) will automatically deselect the sensor.
Nav and Steering Outputs
The FMS provides desired track, bearing, crosstrack, lateral
deviation, and related data to the flight guidance system for the HSI
displays, and roll steering command for the autopilot/flight director
system. In helicopter installations, the roll steering output is limited
to 15° bank during normal leg-to-leg changes. For "Direct To"
course changes, the output is limited to 20° of bank. In airplane
installations, the roll steering during normal leg-to-leg changes is
limited to 27° of bank up to 20,000 feet, decreasing linearly from 27°
to 15° as the altitude increases to 32,000 feet, and remaining at 15°
maximum above 32,000 feet. For "Direct To" course changes, the
steering output is limited to 30° of bank up to 20,000 feet, decreasing
linearly from 30° to 20° as the altitude increases to 32,000 feet, and
remaining at 20° maximum above 32,000 feet. The roll rate is
limited to 3° per second in all installations.
