 EQUIPMENT COOLING FANS - CLEANING

 1.  General
_______
 A.  The equipment cooling fans can become contaminated with unwanted materials which can prevent correct fan operation. This procedure gives instructions to clean the fan impeller and the air passages only. It is necessary to remove the fan housing and impeller to do this procedure. If it is necessary to disassemble the fan more to clean it, you must do an overhaul of the fan per the vendor component maintenance manual. This procedure is applicable for all the fans in the equipment cooling system.

 S 027-001
 (1)  
Remove the fan (Ref 21-58-01/401).

 (2)  
Remove the fan housing to get access to the impeller.

 S 037-003

 (3)  
Remove the nut and the washer at the impeller.

 S 037-002
 (a)  Discard the nut.
 S 987-004
 (4)  Hold the impeller on opposite sides and move it from one side to the other to remove the impeller and the key from the rotor shaft.
 NOTE: You can lightly hit the rotor shaft with a soft face
____ hammer while you pull the impeller to make it easy to remove.

 (5)  Make marks on the impeller so you can install it the same way when
 you removed it.

 (6)  Clean the impeller and the air passages:
 CAUTION:_______ IF THE DETERGENT SOLUTION DOES NOT SOFTEN AND CLEAN THE
 UNIT, YOU MUST DO AN OVERHAUL.  IF WATER GOES INTO THE
 MOTOR OR THE STATOR DRY IT FULLY WITH WARM AIR OR IN AN
 OVEN.
 (a)  Soak the impeller in the water or the detergent solution until
 the contamination loosens.
 (b)  Remove the contamination with a soft-bristle brush or a wood
 spatula.
 (c)  Flush the impeller fully with clean water if you used the
 detergent.
 (d)  Dry the impeller with lint-free wipers or dry compressed air.

 (7)  Install the key and the impeller on the motor shaft.
 NOTE:____ Use the marks on the impeller to install it.

 S 437-007
 CAUTION:_______USE A NEW NUT TO INSTALL THE IMPELLER. IF YOU DO NOT USE A NEW NUT THE IMPELLER CAN BECOME LOOSE DURING OPERATION AND CAUSE DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
 (8)  
Install the washer and the new self-locking nut.

 S 437-009

 (9)  
Tighten the nut 80 to 100 pound-inches (11.3 newton-meters) above the run-on torque.

 NOTE: The minimum back-off torque is 60 pound-inches (6.78
____ newton-meters).

 (10) Install the fan housing.

 (11) Make sure that the impeller turns freely and does not touch the fan housing.
 (a)  Replace the fan if the impeller does not move freely or touches the fan housing.
 NOTE: The fan motor bearings can be the cause of this problem.
