Design considerations
The OTW must be designed to work with a mix of
aircraft at airports where the gate is not exclusive to
one airline and one aircraft type
pendent of the control system in the forward
bridge. This is so that either bridge is
operable in the event that the other bridge
is inoperable or if the
passengelro ad on the aircraft is low and
does not necessitateth e use of the rear
bridge for a particular flight. A separate
control system is also required where a
client chooses to graft an OTW onto an
existing front-loading bridge.
The OTW must employ a means of
removing the bridge from an aircraft in the
event of a power failure or a malfunction
in the bridge. In traditional apron drive
bridges, the gantry brakes can be released
and the bridge towed away from the aircraft,
allowing push back. In the case of a
docked OTW, the bridge can be pulled
away from the aircraft in the same manner,
but the height of the bridge cab will
feel safea nd rigid to the passengear nd
must not sway or bounce, and experience
has shown that the drive systems should
be electromechanicarl ather than
hydraulic. The proper design of an electromechanical
drive system results in a selflocking
feature that prevents unexpected
lowering of the bridge. A further safety
margin exists when two independent drive
systems are used, one on each side of the
bridge, each capable of holding the weight
of the bridge.

stop system is alSo desirable. This hard
stop system automatically adjusts to a
position, a safe distance above the wing, to
hold the weight of the bridge in the event
that the control system (or the bridge
operator when in manual drive mode)
