9.  Thrust Reverser Hydraulic Actuation (Fig. 8)

 A.  The translating sleeve of each thrust reverser is operated by three linear hydraulic actuators, synchronized by a flexible drive shaft cable contained in the hydraulic supply tubing.
 B.  Non-locking hydraulic actuators (also called upper and lower) are installed at the 1:30 and 4:30 or 7:30 and 10:30 o'clock positions. The locking hydraulic actuators (also called center actuators) are installed at the 3 or 9 o'clock position.
 C.  The six hydraulic actuators used to operate the thrust reverser are hydraulically powered, linear piston devices each with a head end area of
 0.88 sq in (5.68 sq cm), a rod end area of 0.44 sq in (2.84 sq cm), and a stroke of 21.75 in (55.25 cm). The hydraulic actuators use BMS 3-11 hydraulic fluid as the operating medium with seals of ethylene propylene rubber.
 D.  Hydraulic actuator movement in the extend direction is supplied when the two head and rod end cavities are connected to the hydraulic source and made an extension force equal to the supply pressure which is on the difference between head and rod end areas. Hydraulic actuator movement in the retract direction is made by connecting the rod end cavity to supply and the head end cavity to return. The linear movement of an actuator piston supplies the rotation of a acme screw that is installed concentric in the piston rod. The piston rod is prevented from rotational motion relative to the actuator body by the gimbal mount of the actuator torque box and pinned attachment of the rod end to the translating sleeve.
 E.  Rotation of the acme screw moves the synchronization worm gear and the flexible drive shafts (flexshafts). The sychronization worm gears of adjacent non-locking hydraulic actuators are connected by flexshafts that are in the hydraulic tubing that connects the head end cavities of these hydraulic actuators. A 0.25 inch square end drive on each end of the flexshafts inserts into the worm gear of the non-locking hydraulic actuators to complete the mechanical connection. A telescoping feature of the hydraulic tubing connector permits inspection for proper insertion of the flexshaft into the locking and non-locking hydraulic actuators.
 F.  As the hydraulic actuators extend, fluid flow to the head end is supplied by one-half of the volume which comes from the fluid source and one-half the volume which comes from the restrictor tee of the flow control system and returned to port PRESS B of the directional control valve.
