NEW GENERATION COCKPIT IT INTEGRATION 3
The sophisticated technologies built into new generation aircraft include
advanced cockpit IT platforms that support a range of cost-saving applications.
Unlike earlier systems relying on specialized links and protocols, new
generation cockpit IT systems take advantage of the generic Internet protocol.
But to reap the full benefits, airlines face the challenge of seamlessly and
securely integrating new cockpit systems into their ground IT environment.
New generation aircraft – such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787 – not only herald a quantum leap in airframe design, but
are also the first aircraft to incorporate highly advanced cockpit IT systems using the generic Internet protocol (IP) to
interconnect aircraft systems and communicate with their groundbased counterparts.
By tightly integrating these new generation cockpit IT systems with ground networks, airlines can improve operations and
implement a fully ‘paperless cockpit’. Through high-speed communication links on the ground at airports (over generic
wireless technologies) and in-flight (via broadband satellite networks), new cockpit IT systems will provide flight and ground
crews with faster access to much richer levels of information.
But integrating these ‘airborne IT domains’ into the corporate airline IT environment also poses major challenges. In an
industry where security and reliability are paramount, protecting aircraft and networks from inadvertent security breaches or
deliberate malicious intent is critical.
At the same time, introducing new aircraft types to existing fleets demands a robust platform that can integrate multiple
technologies, accommodate their individual evolutions, support high levels of customization, and offer robust fault
monitoring tools, reliable interfaces and connectivity to authorized external parties.
With analysts forecasting demand for over 26,000 new commercial aircraft over the next 20 years, and new cockpit IT
systems now being developed for retrofit in existing aircraft, SITA’s AIRCOM IP is the simple and powerful way for airlines to
take full advantage of these advanced IT capabilities.

The introduction of advanced cockpit systems and applications such as
electronic flight bags and electronic logbooks will have a transformational
impact on airline operations.
They will enable the long-awaited implementation of paperless processes in the cockpit, while allowing airlines to leverage
new levels of system intelligence to better diagnose problems, fine-tune procedures, and minimize delays in initiating
corrective actions.
At the same time, these new systems will serve as platforms for ever-more advanced applications, creating a virtuous circle
of continuous operational improvements, cost reductions and safety enhancements. However, the value of new generation
systems and applications depends not only on their ability to process large amounts information, but also on the relevance
and quality of the data they consume or generate. Without the ability to regularly exchange large volumes of information
between aircraft and ground-based systems, the benefits will be greatly diminished.
Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) – Flight Operations Automation
The term ‘EFB’ is something of a misnomer. Not only do these devices entirely replace traditional flight bags filled with
paper manuals and charts, they can also process huge volumes of data in seconds. Gone are the days of tabular
performance calculations and manual updating of voluminous paper binders – today’s EFBs can accomplish these tasks in
a single keystroke. As they become increasingly integrated with other cockpit and aircraft systems, EFB platforms will also
begin to serve as weather displays, moving maps, messaging terminals, surveillance monitors, and more. By revolutionizing
the way information is presented and used in-flight, they represent the ‘tipping point’ that will drive complete integration of
aircraft and IT ground systems using broadband connectivity.

ELB not only replaces the paper reports that are open to inaccurate translation by ground operators, it helps airlines better
manage aircraft and crew performance, streamlining or automating routine and special maintenance requirements, logging
