2-60-2 Removal of the Vertical Fin
1. The removal of the fin is not a usual maintenance operation but it can be necessary in an airplane recovery. Thus, we show the removal procedure here.
A. Identification of the Fin Structure and the Fin Connections

The primary components and the dimensions of the vertical fin are shown in SUBJECT 1-10-1, Figure 1-22. Station diagram for the fin can be found in the Airplane Maintenance Manual (AMM) Chapter 06, or Structural Repair Manual (SRM) Chapter 55.

After you remove the dorsal fin, you remove the full vertical fin as one unit from the airplane.

The fin is attached to Body Section 48 at the bottom of the aft torque box of the fin (between Body Stations 1720 and 1787). There is also a link-type connection for side loads on the front part of the fin (at Body Station 1672).

There are 27 fasteners (8 tension bolts and 19 Hi-Lok bolts) on each side of the bottom fin connection. The fastener pattern is shown in Figure 2-38.
2. Necessary Tools and Equipment
A. Vertical Fin Sling Equipment, B55001-( )
B. Necessary socket wrenches
C. Hi-Lok bolt removal equipment
D. Necessary extension bars
E. Necessary torque handles for untorquing leverage
F. Internal access platform or ladders (to be used inside of Section 48)
G. A movable tower (the necessary height of reach must agree with the attitude and height of the damaged airplane in relation to the ground; see SUBJECT 3-30-3 for various conditions)
H. A boom crane (crane has to be chosen based on the boom length and the lift capacity at the necessary boom angle)
I. Dunnage material (old tires, bed of timbers, etc)
J. Buckets to drain hydraulic fluid (as necessary)
K. Rope to be used for guy lines, approximately 100 ft (31 m) long, 3/8-in. (10 mm) diameter Nylon or manila rope with a break strength of no less than 1,000 lb (454 kg). A minimum of six lines is necessary.
3. Access to the Fin When you remove the fin, you must have access to the fasteners from the bottom (inside Body Station 48)
and from the top (inside the fin). The fasteners are installed at BWL (Body Water Line) 293 between the Body Stations 1720 and 1787. See Figure 2-39 for the door and the panel locations. The fin entrance (manhole) at BWL 293 is approximately 100 inches (254 mm) above the door B48-1 in
Section 48. Thus, you must use ladders or you must make a platform. This permits you to do the necessary procedures at BWL 293. If it is possible, make a work surface at BWL 213 (approximately). This is the easiest location for a work surface because of all the other lines and components in the area.
