MCTOW
Maximum certificated take-off weight. The
weight identified in the type
certificate.
MEL
Minimum Equipment List. A document
approved by Transport Canada
under subsection 605.07(3) that
authorizes inoperative equipment, or
equipment that must be working.
MF area
The surface area and airspace near
an uncontrolled aerodrome to which
a mandatory frequency has been
assigned, about which the reporting
procedures in Division V of Subpart
2 of Part VI are applicable, and
identified in the Canada Air Pilot or
the Canada Flight Supplement.
MDA
Minimum Descent Altitude. The altitude
ASL in the Canada Air Pilot, or route
and approach inventory, for a nonprecision
approach, below which
descent must not be made until
visual reference to continue has been
established.
minimum enroute altitude
The lowest altitude ASL in the
Designated Airspace Handbook for an
area, or between fixes on airways or
air routes, that assures acceptable
navigational signal coverage and
meets obstruction clearance criteria.
minimum flight crew document
One issued by Transport Canada,
the Government of the United
States or an aircraft manufacturer,
that relates to an aircraft and that
specifies the number of pilots to
operate it, but does not include an
air operator certificate.
minimum rest period
A period during which a crew
member is free from all duties, is not
interrupted by the operator, and can
obtain at least eight consecutive
hours of sleep in suitable
accommodation, time to travel to
and from that accommodation and
time for personal hygiene and meals.

missed approach procedure
To be followed if, after an
instrument approach, a landing is
not effected.
MMEL
Master MEL. A reference document
after which lesser ones are modelled.
MOCA
Minimum Obstruction Clearance Altitude.
The altitude ASL ensuring an IFR
aircraft will be clear of the highest
obstacle in an airway or air route.
model aircraft
One with a total weight under 35 kg
(77.2 lbs), mechanically driven or
launched into flight for recreational
purposes, not designed to carry
people or other living creatures.
model rocket
One with model rocket engines that
will not generate a total impulse over
80 newton-seconds, under 500kg
and with a parachute or other device
capable of retarding its descent.
movement area
Part of an aerodrome for the surface
movement of aircraft, including the
manoeuvring area and aprons.

nationality mark
Symbols, letters or numerals, or
combinations, used by states to
indicate nationality of aircraft
registered in them.
net take-off flight path
The one-engine-inoperative flight
path starting at 35' at the end of the
TODR, extending to at least 1,500
feet AGL, reduced at each point by a
climb gradient of 0.8% for twoengined
aeroplanes, 0.9% for threeengined
aeroplanes and 1% for fourengined
aeroplanes.
night
½ hour after sunset to ½ hour
before sunrise, or where the centre
of the Sun's disc is more than 6°
below the horizon.
non-piloted aircraft
A power-driven aircraft, other than a
model, without a crew member.
non-precision approach
One using azimuth information only.
Northern Domestic Airspace
As per the Designated Airspace
Handbook.
NOTAM
A notice to airmen about
aeronautical facilities, services or
procedures, or any hazard affecting
aviation safety, essential to personnel
engaged in flight operations.
obstacle limitation surface
One that establishes the limit to
which objects may project into
airspace associated with an
aerodrome, so that operations for
