As you can see when you compare
the opposites, each side of each coin
above is as bad as the other – we
should be somewhere in the middle,

Flight Deck Management
This includes you; what sort of
personality do you have? Do you
leave everything to the last minute?
Are you a placid type, or nervous
and anxious? Do you have a low
self-image or are you on the arrogant
side? Do you succumb to pressure?
Are you strong enough to stand up
to the Chairman of the Board who
insists he must get there NOW? It's
better to ask for help and look
stupid, than not to ask and risk
looking worse.
Unfortunately, the ability to laugh at
yourself and not feel uncomfortable
when you've cocked things up only
comes with a certain degree of
maturity. As you get older, you
accept that mistakes are made;
there's no shame in that, even the
most experienced pilot couldn't fly at
one time—the trick lies in not
making the same mistake twice, or at
least ensuring that the ones you
make aren’t the fatal ones.
There are so many tasks in a typical
flight deck environment that they
cannot all be done by one person
effectively, hence the need for
delegation, which implies that
someone must set the tasks to be
performed and monitor them. That
person is the Captain. With that
position comes responsibilities, not
least of which is allowing other
persons in the team a chance to
develop (i.e. let the P2 get on with
the emergency), and the need for
humility, as when recognising that
someone else may actually be better
than you at doing what’s required,
and accepting that they may do it in
a totally different way. Also, as
previously mentioned, there is the
need to be a leader, and motivate,
rather than drive, people – in other
words, set tasks and objectives, but
not necessarily the way they are
done. Don’t forget to provide
positive support (if you're a First
Officer, regardless of what your
company says, it's your job to check

on the Captain and mention it if you
think there's anything wrong).
An effective leader should perform
certain functions, including regulating
information flow, directing activities,
motivation and decision making.
Synergy is the process that allows the
group to appear greater than the sum
of its parts. Groups are more likely
than individuals to make decisions
concerning risk (risky shift). Conformity
concerns the likelihood of an
individual to go along with a group
decision, even if it is wrong.
A request is more likely to be
complied with if a greater one has
previously been denied or a lesser
one accepted (compliance).
Risk Management
One definition of risk is the chance
that a situation, or the consequences
of one, will be hazardous enough to
cause harm, injury or loss.
To have absolutely no risk, of
course, we shouldn't take off at all,
but we obviously can't do that, so we
have to have some method of
evaluating risk against some sort of
yardstick in order to get the job
done. Risk management is the key, best
used in an ample-time decisionmaking
situation.
For example, in a helicopter, it can
sometimes be more dangerous to
avoid the height/velocity curve (say
when coming out of a confined area)
than to be inside it for a few
seconds.
Risk management is a decisionmaking
tool that can be applied to
either eliminate risk, or reduce it to
an acceptable level. Things that stop
you eliminating risk entirely would
either be impracticality, or money.
With it, you have to first identify a
hazard, analyse any associated risks,
make a decision and implement it
(with a risk strategy) and monitor the
results, with a view to changing
things if need be. However, this
depends on the perception of a risk,
and the difference between yours,
the management's and the
customer's can be quite startling.
Outside influences include weather,
traffic and obstacles. Internal ones
can be maintenance, fatigue, or the
