Qantas said it would further
cut capacity as the global
financial crisis continued to
affect passenger demand.
The Chief Executive Officer
of Qantas, Geoff Dixon,
said that in addition to capacity
cuts announced earlier
this year, Qantas would
reduce capacity equivalent
to grounding 10 aircraft.
"By taking this action now
we will have the flexibility to
switch growth back on as
soon as market conditions
improve. We are in unpredictable
times and the international
business market, in
particular, has slowed," he
said. As a result of the
slower demand Qantas now
expected its profit before
tax for the 2008/2009 financial
year to be around
A$500 million. "This figure
is within the current range
of analysts forecasts." For
the full year ended 30 June
2008, Qantas reported a
record profit before tax of
A$1,408 million, a 46% increase
on the full year to 30
June 2007. Net profit after
tax was A$970 million.
Dixon said the current economic
downturn had principally
affected Qantas'
mainline international operations.
"Qantas' domestic
operations, Jetstar, Qantas
Frequent Flyer and Qantas
Freight all continue to perform
well. This highlights
the value of the Group's
segmentation strategy. In
particular, our two-brand
strategy with Jetstar and
Qantas is giving us the
flexibility to better manage
changes in the market."
Dixon said Qantas would
manage the capacity cuts
by not taking up the
planned lease of two A330-
200 aircraft; changing the
flying patterns of existing
aircraft to free up the
equivalent of six 747-400s,
three 767-300s and one
A320-200 aircraft between
now and mid-2010. As an

additional measure to address

Second 777-300ER for TAM
TAM S.A. received a Boeing 777-
300ER, the second of eight total
aircraft of this model acquired by the
company. TAM is operating the route
between Sao Paulo and Frankfurt,
Germany, with this new aircraft.
Volaris goes for SelectOne
Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris has
chosen to upgrade its future engine
deliveries for 14 aircraft to the V2500
SelectOne standard. In January
2006, Toluca-based Volaris placed
an order for V2500-A5s to power 16
firm and 40 option Airbus A319s, all
backed by IAE’s V2500Select
aftermarket package. The airline
firmed 14 of these aircraft options in
July last year and this deal covers
the engines for these aircraft. In total,
the airline already operates 21
V2500-powered aircraft.
North American Airlines adds
sixth 767-300ER to its fleet
North American Airlines, a subsidiary
of Global Aero Logistics, is growing
its fleet of charter jets. North
American has entered into an
agreement with aircraft lessor
AerCap Group to take delivery of its
sixth Boeing 767-300ER in
December 2008. This additional B-
