“We recognize our state’s interdependence
on international trade, we also
need to respect our state’s workforce,”
Farr said.
Farr plans to continue her weekly trips
to Olympia to meet with lawmakers,
attend hearings and special meetings.
SPEEA members will also go to
Olympia, including a trip Feb. 24 and 25
to the Washington State Labor Council
Legislative Conference in Olympia. At this
conference, members are in pre-scheduled
back-to-back meetings with lawmakers in
addition to attending special functions
with lawmakers and fellow labor delegates.
“It’s helpful from a legislative strategy
to have our members come down to
Olympia and advocate for themselves,”
Farr said. “Lawmakers always like to hear
from constituents directly.”
“We hope all SPEEA members take the
time to contact their lawmakers during
the session,” said Joel Funfar, chair of
the NW and SPEEA L&PA Committees.
“You may be surprised at how responsive
they are to your concerns,” he said.

you can find e-mail addresses for your
state senators and representatives).
• Attend an L&PA Committee
meeting – The Northwest L&PA
Committee meets on the fourth

Case study
When things aren’t right, who do you call?
A SPEEA Area Representative
(AR), frustrated by explanations
that he knew weren’t
c o r rect, contacted his Contract
Administrator (CA) for assistance. This
employee’s dependent had multiple visits
for the same medical procedure during
the previous six months. When receiving a
statement in mid-October, it showed that
the “maximum allowable” decreased while
the “patient responsibility” increased. The
insurance carrier representative told the
AR that the “maximum allowable” was
decreased pursuant to the collective bargaining
agreement.
The CA received a summary of events from
the employee and followed up with the
liaison from the insurance carrier. Within
three hours, a response was received, noting
that both the latest billing and the
ensuing explanations were incorrect. The
insurance carrier agreed to reprocess the
bills in question to be identical to the levels
they had been during the previous six
months.
It’s always hoped that insurance issues are
this easily resolved. SPEEA CAs continually
try to facilitate by getting the necessary
information to the appropriate parties
within the insurance company for resolution.
However, the reality in most of these
cases is that they require much more extensive
research in trying to reach the contractually
correct resolution. [BR]

Boeing issues 17 new 60-day
notices of layoff
On Jan. 21, Boeing issues 60-day notices of layoff (effective March 25) to 17 SPEEA
represented employees in Wichita. The total layoff notices for January are as follows:

Triumph Spokane
lands Airbus contract
SPOKANE – The first infusion of new
work for SPEEA-represented employees
at Triumph is coming from the world’s
largest commercial aerospace company
– Airbus Industries.
Triumph Composite Systems, Inc.,
which bought the plant from The Boeing
Company in 2001, will build the floor
panels for the A380 freighter. This is a
$35 million contract.
