 G. Delete Key
 (1)  The delete (DEL) key is a special-purpose key which is used to remove data from a display (and thus a flight plan) after the data has been line selected and accepted into a data field. If the scratch pad is empty, pressing the DEL key will write "DELETE" into the scratch pad. The delete process is hence complete when the operator line-selects (by LSK the data item to be removed. If the deletion is a valid one, the data field reverts to its default value (box prompts, dashes, or a system-generated value). If the DEL key is used incorrectly, the system will prevent the operator from making a mistake. Selection of the wrong LSK on a page in which the delete operation is valid for at least one display parameter, will bring up an INVALID DELETE message in the scratch pad. Pressing the DEL key when the displayed page has no valid delete operation evokes no response. The DEL key must be pressed once for each parameter to be deleted.
 H. Lighted Annunciators
 (1)  Only three of the four annunciators on the front of the CDU are used for the FMCS. These annunciators are: MSG, DSPY, and FAIL. The message (MSG) annunciator is white in color, and is illuminated to indicate to the operator the presence of an alert or advisory message. The MSG annunciator is lit even if the message is not shown in the current display's scratch pad (usually because the page was changed by the operator without the message being cleared). The display (DSPY) annunciator is also white; it is illuminated when the current display is not related to the active flight plan leg. The DSPY annunciator is also illuminated when the current display is not related to the currently operational performance mode (for example, selecting a CRZ page when CLB is active). The FAIL annunciator is amber in color and is lit if any system failure is detected by the built-in test (BIT).
 I. CDU Inputs and Outputs
 (1)  Inputs and outputs of the control display unit are characterized by ARINC 429 Digital Information Transfer System (DITS) standard.
 J. CDU Internals (Fig. 5)
 (1)  Digital CRT controller and ARINC interface circuits generate characters and symbols, for display on the CRT screen. These circuits also transfer ARINC 429 digital data.

 (2)  
CDU controller and keyboard/annunciator interface circuits contain a microprocessor and programmed memory. These circuits perform keyboard decoding and data display on CRT. They also control the FMC FAIL, MSG, and EXEC annunciators.

 (3)  
Video and deflection circuits provide horizontal and vertical position deflection of the characters on the CRT screen.

 (4)  
Automatic brightness control circuits provide display brightness control, in conjunction with the manual BRT knob and the automatic sensors. These circuits also provide power-on reset, annunicator regulator, and BITE, and CRT protection monitor.

 (5)  
A low voltage power supply, within the CDU, provides the necessary operating voltages for the circuit card assemblies.

 (6)  
A high voltage power supply, within the CDU, provides the high voltage necessary for operating the CRT.


 K.  The Airplane's master dim and test circuitry provide 28v dc to CDU for annunciator lighting and lamp test.
 5.  Flight Management Computer__________________________
 A.  General
 (1)  The FMC provides optimal speed, thrust, and flight path guidance. This optimization is based upon real time sensor measurements of actual flight conditions, and the operator's definition of flight cost factors to be optimized. The optimal performance calculations that determine climb, cruise, and descent schedules are embedded in the FMCS program, and they automatically provide the required speed and thrust limit targets which can be coupled by vertical guidance commands to the airplane's autopilot and autothrottle systems. The primary cost economical mode (ECON) is selected automatically by the system without operator input. Other modes may be manually selected if operating conditions warrant.
