The Kalman .lter is a minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimator that is optimal if the initial state of the system as well as all the noise entering the system are Gaussian. Otherwise, the Kalman .lter is the best estimator among the class of linear MMSE state estimators. This section brie.y derives
